“A” Players have a Multiplier Effect

First Off, You know I have to believe this because I am quoting Belichick up top and I kinda swore I would never do that. Sorry #12’s

If people are willing to work, everyone is a “A” player at something. If you want to do something great, you have to build it with a great team. A great team is made up of “A” players at the roles you need and the stage you are currently.

The people you want to attract not only do the job, they make those around them better, they improve the processes and amplify culture as a role-model

“A” players make everyone around them better.

Seems like it continues to get more competitive out there for talent. Don’t Settle.

Here are a couple of lessons learned that I hope help you and that I apply currently as we are building our teams for Intersect Life and DOSH.

“A” Players will hire “A” Players. B Players will hire “C” Players. A Players understand that they need to surround themselves with people who are smarter and better. Smart, driven people are also attracted to smart, driven people.

·     Hiring better people is your #1 recruitment strategy.

·     Top talent wants to work with top talent. That is how championship teams are formed.

“A” Players at one stage are not necessarily “A” Players at every stage. Someone great at starting company is not necessarily great at the scaling stage. They are different skills and most do not adapt. Great baseball players and great football players are both great. Know what sport you are playing.

Just as important, an “A” Player at one company may not be an “A” player for you. Look at culture, company size, etc.

Just because they once were an “A” Player once does not mean they are still one. You want the one who is currently doing impactful things. Staying current matters. A Players are life-long learners.

People can grow into “A” Players.   Everyone fails at something. People get better. Does the person you are looking at own their past performance and have a strategy to better themselves? Have they learned to be challenged and are they willing to prove-themselves?

“A” Players are worth the stretch… But there is a stretch.   Guess what? You are not the only one who is looking for the best. Are you willing to keep them challenged, give them room to grow and mentor and invest in them? Are you willing to surround yourself with people who are smarter than you? Are you willing to work differently and not always have all the ides?  Because, this is what it will take.

What is working for you?

Let’s go and get better today.

Make Today Count.

Win by Controlling What You Can

Every great leader I have ever worked with in business, politics or ministry have all had an incredible ability to focus.

It is this ability that rise above the noise or separate the wheat from the chaff that keeps them moving forward when others get distracted or get knocked back by circumstances completely beyond their ability to affect.

So the key question is what can you actually control? How do you stay focused on what matters?

Whether it is my son’s 10 year-old flag football team, a global sales force, or an executive counterpart, every team and person I have had the privilege to lead has heard me mention and repeat the following (over and over.)

The Key to Success is controlling what you can and the only things you can control is your:

·    Attitude – Your attitude will determine your experience.

·     Effort – Your Effort reflects your willingness to fight.

·     Preparation– Your preparation allows you to make the most of the opportunity when it comes.

Notice what is not on this list:

You cannot control:

·     The Result – Sometimes you lose the game, don’t get the deal. Lean what you can and prepare better next time.

·     Other People (As Much as We would like to) – Some people will not like you, their choice. You control your attitude toward them.

·     Timing – Sometimes people get sick or in accidents. Will this distract you or will you put the effort in and get back to work.

As a leader, people are looking to you. They key is you can help them more effectively fail-forward if you can look at a set-back and say, “Next Time, do we need to improve our attitude, Effort or Preparedness?”

A great cake is made of great ingredients. You don’t fix the cake, you fix the what goes into the cake. Same applies here.

Stuff Happen and most of it you can’t control… Get over it and don’t get so paralyzed by the outcome that you don’t learn from the process.

You will see a multiplication of results by putting your and your team’s focus and attention on what you can actually affect.  Let’s go get better.

3 Keys to make 2017 – “The Year You Finally Did It”

It is amazing what a new start can do. Make 2017 be the year that you actually do it. That nagging goal that never seems to happen… Make this year that year that it does.

Don’t let others’ cynicism infect you. Don’t carry old ways of thinking into your new year and don’t let your own voices of past disappointments talk you out of becoming the best you before you even get started.

One truth is that life is pretty short and when we realize that :

1.    every day and every year matters.

2.     we have everything we need to start making progress to reaching our goals and living a life of purpose.

In Short – What you do today matters to yourself and those around you.

Here are 3 Keys to help you get started.

Set Destinations and First Steps – What do you want to see happen in your life in 2017? Is it a promotion, a new job, better relationships, to get in shape? Begin the year with your destination in mind.

You need to be motivated enough by the destination to be willing to make the changes needed. If you don’t know where you want to go, you will just stay where you are.

Many of us stop before we ever get started because our old habits and ways of thinking stop us before we even get started. Many get overwhelmed with looking 10 steps down the road.   Take one step, then another, then another. A journey of 1000 miles is take a step at a time.

Change is made one decision at a time. You make a decision to work out today and then become determined to do it again tomorrow. Take the first step and don’t over-think it.

Prioritization is the Key – You can’t change 10 things at once. You can change 1.   So take a look at what you want to do and begin to prioritize. You will only change what you are truly committed to change. Prioritizing your goals will make sure you gain alignment and momentum to conquer the next one.

Momentum Starts Today….. One Step at a Time!!!

Make Today Count.

2017-4 Keys to an Incredible Year

I have heard from so many how hard 2016 was for them physically, emotionally and Spiritually. My prayer is that God will fling wide the doors that He has for your life and close the doors to the hurt and struggle that so many faced personally and as a collective.

Four things I know as we enter 2017 full of hope and faith.

1. I don’t have to understand to believe – God is and will always be in charge. He is not bound by seasons. His love is incredible and constant. He never gives up, gets tired. He is never surprised and He does have an incredible plan for your life. Even if you can’t see it.

2. Persistence builds endurance and resistance builds strength.- “When your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

3. Your breakthrough is on the other side of your door – God has a plan for you, your family, your mistakes, your triumphs and He is turning your life into a message of hope.

4. Don’t mistake your plan for His Plan– 2016 was in many ways a challenging one, personally, where I saw some doors close and other incredible doors open in Business and in Ministry. I find myself entering 2017 working on some of the impactful things I have ever done. I have learned that I needed to let go of my plan and embrace the plan God has for me. His plan is truly better.

To make the most of this year, start by asking God to Open what He has for you and then run through that door with great expectations. God is asking you to be you.

You can do “All Things” through God’s strength. Lean in let Him carry the weight.

Praying this year will be the most incredible in your life.

We Heal Together

One at a Time… A Call to Heal.

Fear crushes people.  You see the evidence all over social media and the news today.  Many of my friends who are the brightest lights in their communities are struggling to make sense of what is going on, struggling with anger and struggling with people who think or act differently.  Their words show the struggle is real as we try and make sense of killings that are not rational.  It can all seem so out of control and like it will get worse before it gets better.

My heart breaks for the people in our nation… From Ferguson to Baton Rouge to Chicago to St. Paul to Dallas, My heart breaks.   My heart breaks for the families, for that poor woman who filmed the man dying in the car, for families of police officers and for the communities of West Chicago where people are afraid to go outside.

together-we-heal-617x347Praying can sometimes seem so futile in the face of rage, hurt, killings but Prayer is the only place where light starts to break through the darkness.  I have no answers but I am learning where to direct my questions.

Words spoken to others make you feel better.  They won’t bring back those whose lives are lost.  They won’t stop men from bleeding on the streets.  They won’t stop the bullets.   Words spoken to God, change hearts and move mountains.

Blame doesn’t matter.  Labels don’t cure and yelling don’t heal.

Bringing people to justice makes us feel better and gives us a time to rally. Until the next time.  Justice is so limited and taken to an extreme demands a life for a life.  We need better than that or this crazy cycle we are on never stops.   It is all temporary until the heart changes.  Our love for each other has got to be greater than fear or each other.  Our Love for each other has to louder than that shouts of hate and fear.

There is no Fear found in Love.  Love actually pushes fear away.  God wasn’t screwing around.  He told us that is we love each other, pray for each other than this crap stops.  If we don’t, there are not enough marches in the world to unite us.

Love is not a feeling.  It is a decision.  A decision to fight for and with the one next to me, not against them.

One Life touches immeasurable people… One Death too early, even more.  Neither can or should be summed up in hashtag.  People’s lives are not a political forum.

Start with you… Are your words bringing people together or are your words filled with the same fear that already divides. Your words amplify bringing us together or being right in your rage.  One Unifies and One Divides.

You can be a bridge or you can be a wall.  Not both.

Control what you can.  Today, God Knows, that does not feel like much.  Today, I can control My words, My prayers and My love for people.  I can hug those around me begin building.  Seems like a place to start.\

Praying for you.

So You Want to Build a Sales Team

Every Start-up hits the point where they move from having a couple of sales people to building a sales team.  This might be because sales are taking off or most-likely because you took some funding and were told you had to scale your Demand Generation and Sales.

If only, it was as simple as hiring more sales people.

Here is some quick and simple advice to help you avoid some common mistakes in building a sales team based on the questions I get most often.

Understand your target customers.  Who is buying your product today and is who is your target customer for the next 18 months?  So much money is wasted because people either hire too senior or too junior of sales people to tackle the challenges of selling to the clients they can close.

Is your sale, transactional and focused on the SMB market or is your solution focused on Enterprise customers?  These are completely different sales and need completely different people. The clearer you are, the less mistakes you will make.

Do you have a sales leader?  You can have 3,4,5 sales people without a true sales leader but if you want to scale a team, you have to hire a professional sales manager.  Alignment, again, is key but they also need to have a sales process they can use to develop the sales people into a team.

They will also help you sniff through a good story and get the right people who can actually do the job.

If you don’t have a sales leader, pay one you know at another company and have them come and help you hire sales people until you find one.

You will want a simple comp plan….   My Advice…. For One time purchases go with straight percentage and for SAAS, go with 1 to 2X monthly revenue.   Your sales leader will build on accelerators.  Remember, the plan should drive the outcome you want.

You are going to need an CRM.  You can choose to start with Salesforce www.salesforce.com, Insightly, www.insightly.com or Zoho, www.zoho.com.

Most likely, you will end up on Salesforce eventually but by no means do you have to start there as it can be expensive and not necessary until you start integrating other areas of the business.  You do need a sales funnel and visibility.  Start running your sales team from dashboards as quickly as you can to build that culture from the beginning.

Don’t hire dramatically faster than you can scale Demand Gen.

You want to build in the culture of prospecting from the beginning but you do not want a team where at least 30% of the leads are not uncovered through Marketing. If you have more sales people than leads, you are hiring too fast and need to really focus on scaling Demand Gen to avoid wasting money.

If you have too much Demand Gen, your sales team will get fat and will never prospect.  Sounds funny to have too much Demand Gen, but if your sales people can make their number based on incoming leads, you need to hire more sales people.  Otherwise, this will have cultural ramifications for a long time.  Trust me, if there is a limited number of leads, the sales team will work each one of them like gold

Here is a rule I use…

I want the Sales team to uncover at least 50% of their own opportunities.  With all of the tools out there from LinkedIn Sales Navigator, to ClearBit Connect you do not have to rely on cold-calling but you do need to prospect.

Hope this helps.  We will cover Direct or Channel Sales at a different Time.

Let me know the tools you find most valuable and how I can help.  Let’s build great teams together.

Orlando…Healing Together Starts by Grieving Together.

Orlando<img class=”progressiveMedia-noscript js-progressiveMedia-inner” src=”https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1600/1*3h7nLELaHtksNoC0lMJ7Pw.jpeg”>
Healing Together Starts by Grieving Together.

Yesterday, I was in line at my favorite BBQ place on my way to church when I saw the news. 50 people dead in the largest mass shooting in American history. My day and in someways, my life will never be the same.

My heart is broken as a city grieves. Afterward, talking with people and reading the news, people quickly wanted to turn attention to the topics of gun control, politics, radical Islam, or the gay, lesbian, transgender community.

When Politics becomes a religion or idol, it seems to infest everything and people want to quickly blame, categorize and move on. Politics makes us feel better and shifts responsibility away from us. I pray as a nation, we can feel this one and come together for those in need. Let’s not be so quick this time.

All of the above issues are important, but not as important as we think. This week, let’s grieve for the people, for the community of Orlando and all the families those who were affected. We should pray for those still in need of healing and unleash generosity on those in need of blood, counseling and donations. Let’s not be too quick to move our focus away from the faces, the stories, and the sorrow.

Today, some of the names are starting to come out as we see the faces of the victims, the families and come to the grips with the reality of this tragedy. Any life cut short, has a domino affect and this one will rattle Orlando and this entire nation.

We grieve with those who are grieving and our most important gift is to love and help each other. There are issues to discuss but they fall tremendously short of the importance of us coming together and realizing that none of these issues will comfort the families and friends who has their word ripped apart.

If we let this moment be another issue that divide us. hate wins. Let our response be greater that that, let our response be to love our neighbor, to send whatever is needed to Orlando and then to reach out to a neighbor where ever you are and let them know you are for them, no matter how different you are. If you don’t know where t start, try, “How can I help?”

We grieve together, we live together, we pray together and if we are willing to really love each other, we win as we step out of the darkness and toward the light together. Love is way more powerful and I know it can sound naïve but when applied, Love Wins every time, we just need to take some time to show it.

Pray: Pray for physical healing for victims, Pray for healing for families, Pray for peace and Pray for communities coming together.
